LT Alumni Conversation: Reparations Presentation and Discussion

  • Leadership Tomorrow 1301 5th Ave, Suite 1500 Seattle, WA 98101 United States (map)

How do we as a society respond to the legacy of enslavement, Jim Crow, and discrimination to set a course for reconciliation and healing in our country?  The catastrophic impacts of chattel slavery, colonialism, genocide, racism, discrimination, and more continue to negatively impact Black Americans and other communities of color, leading to racial resentment and inequality in the United States.  We need to acknowledge the price we all pay for our history.

There are multiple frameworks and models for reparations, including acknowledging and apologizing for the harm and ongoing impacts of slavery, ensuring public education of history and impacts, financial compensation, and/or institutional changes.

We invite the LT community to join a conversation on reparations for Black Americans on October 21st. This event is hosted by the LT POC Alumni Group and members of white antiracist caucuses from multiple LT classes.

The event will include a presentation, a short video, and facilitated small group discussions. Like Challenge Days/Nights, we will ask participants to do some pre-reading (pre-work). We hope this event will be the first of many LT-wide conversations on significant community issues like reparations.
