Seattle is facing a homelessness crisis. Since 2018, volunteers at Seattle’s Hope Factory have built over 600 tiny homes to serve as transitional housing for people experiencing homelessness. These tiny homes offer residents a safe, private space with electrical power but are constructed without plumbing or permanent foundations, which helps keep costs down.
The homes are grouped into “villages” that feature shared facilities with plumbing, including kitchens, bathrooms, showers, and laundry areas. Each village also provides comprehensive onsite social services. Residents receive personalized support plans designed to meet their specific needs and help them transition to stable, permanent housing. Tiny home villages consistently achieve high success rates in moving residents into long-term, affordable housing.
On the morning of our LT build day, we’ll start with stacks of lumber and construct four walls, a platform, and a roof. After lunch, we’ll “tilt up” the walls onto the platform and raise the roof—using power tools safely and efficiently. Absolutely zero building experience is required! Volunteer leaders will provide guidance throughout the day. The event will also include a meaningful educational component about Seattle’s homelessness crisis.
