LT Alumni Racial Equity Retreat Highlights

On May 20, 2022 at Bethaday Community Learning Center, LT held its first full-day retreat focused on racial equity. After online programming for 2+ years, the magic of physically being together was palpable. The event was designed to meet alumni at their wide range of learning edges – from those who have tremendous experience and expertise to those who are just starting this work. Alumni who participated in the retreat spanned the decades, with graduates from 1989 to 2021!

Here’s what a few alumni said about their experience at the retreat and what motivated them to participate.

I wanted to come back to the Leadership Tomorrow community. One thing I will be taking away is the power of direct interaction and relationship. It’s easier to have difficult conversations when you have some shared humanity.
— Bish Paul, LT’20, Snap Inc.

I heard a theme today. We are all looking for community. We all recognize the need to lean on one another, collaborate more effectively, and not work in silos. We need partnership and community to get this work done.

As a white man, I want to be part of disrupting racism. Talking to other white people in caucus settings is crucial. To use my white privilege as a force for good, I need to use my voice and ears to show up, learn, and grow.

I always come away from LT events with new things to think about and practices to implement in my life. I’m working on projects on inclusion and equity in research and healthcare, and I wanted to hear what other institutions are doing. Sometimes it’s insulating to work with only others within our own institutions. Hearing how other organizations approach this work is so inspiring and eye-opening.
— Wendy Law, LT’11, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center
